Know the signs and symptoms of a traumatic injury that affects the lips and tongue

In everyday life, it is not uncommon for people to be suffering from trauma to the lips, tongue and inside the mouth. Because of the delicate nature of the lips and their vulnerable position on the face, it is common to receive injury. If someone goes to dab smack you in the face, the force of the blow can destroy your lips against your teeth causing bruises or cuts. Subsequently, the teeth can cut the inside of the lips or puncture a delicate skin. In case you have fallen or someone hits you, you might as well bite your tongue. Since there are numerous blood vessels in the mouth, it is common for heavy bleeding to occur from trauma injury.

When you visit your dentist, he or she is in discussion about the trauma and do a complete examination of the dental injury. If your lips have been damaged by trauma, he or she will inspect the teeth and bones for the problems, and look for fragments of the tooth.

Depending on how bad the trauma was, the healing time for the lip and tongue vary. One of the advantages of having a lot of blood vessels inside the mouth helps promote faster healing.

It is not uncommon for many injuries that happen to be active in sports or other recreational activities. Many times these injuries can be prevented by the use of a mouthguard safety. These mouth guards are made of soft plastic that is molded to fit the shape of the upper teeth. If you are active in? Heavy contact sport, your dentist may recommend upper and lower mouth guards. These mouth guards provide protection for both the lips and teeth and biting company providing a surface for your back teeth. While the pre-formed mouth guards can be purchased at sporting-goods stores outside the neighborhood, you can get a much better mouth guard if your dentist fabricated one.

In the event that you should receive a trauma to the skin outside of your mouth, you can try to clean the wound with soap and water. If you have cuts inside the mouth, you can use a solution of salt water or hydrogen peroxide diluted with water in two parts. Make sure not to ingest these rinses. In the case when the choice of applying hydrogen peroxide to treat the wound, it is common for the solution of the foam as it touches the surface injured.

If the trauma is severe enough to cause your lips swell or become bruised, you should try to apply a cold ice pack on the affected area. If there is bleeding, you want to apply firm pressure with a clean cloth for a period of at least five minutes. The ice reduces swelling, bleeding, and discomfort. You can try to put crushed ice in a zip-lock bag or a clean cloth and apply pressure on the affected area.
